Calculation Explanation

This calculator uses the Harris-Benedict equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs to maintain basic physiological functions at rest. The BMR is calculated differently based on gender:

  • For Males: BMR = 10 * weight + 6.25 * height – 5 * age + 5
  • For Females: BMR = 10 * weight + 6.25 * height – 5 * age – 161

After calculating the BMR, the result is multiplied by an activity multiplier that corresponds to your selected activity level to give an estimate of your total daily calorie needs:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR * 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week): BMR * 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week): BMR * 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days/week): BMR * 1.725
  • Super active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training): BMR * 1.9

Limitations of the Calculator

While this calculator provides an estimate of your daily calorie needs, it does not account for specific factors such as muscle mass, metabolic conditions, or individual metabolic rates. It is intended for general use and guidance. For personalized dietary recommendations, consulting a nutritionist or dietitian is recommended.
