How to Use the Calorie Calculator

To use this calculator, simply enter your age, select your gender, and input your height in centimeters and weight in kilograms. Then, choose your activity level from the dropdown menu and click on the “Calculate” button. The calculator will display your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) in the results section.

Explanation of the Calculator

The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs at rest to maintain vital bodily functions such as breathing, heart rate, and body temperature. The Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is an estimate of how many calories you need to maintain your current weight based on your level of physical activity.

The calculator uses the Harris-Benedict equation to estimate your BMR:

  • For men: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (years) + 5
  • For women: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (years) – 161

It then multiplies your BMR by an activity factor to estimate your TDEE:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR * 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week): BMR * 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week): BMR * 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): BMR * 1.725
  • Super active (very hard exercise/physical job & exercise 2x/day): BMR * 1.9

Limitations of the Calculator

This calculator provides estimates based on standard equations and may not account for all factors that can affect your caloric needs such as muscle mass, overall health, or metabolic conditions. Always consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized advice.
