How It Calculates

The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs at rest. It then multiplies your BMR by an activity factor to estimate your daily caloric needs based on your activity level. The activity factor varies as follows:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise): 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week): 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week): 1.55
  • Active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): 1.725
  • Very active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job): 1.9

The calculator then estimates the total weight you need to lose to reach your goal and calculates how many weeks it will take to reach this goal based on your desired weight loss rate per week. Finally, it calculates your goal date by adding the required number of weeks to the current date.

Limitations

While this calculator can provide you with a good estimate, it has some limitations:

  • It estimates caloric needs based on average formulas, which may not perfectly apply to every individual.
  • Factors such as muscle mass, medical conditions, and other unique factors are not accounted for.
