How It Calculates

The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories you burn at rest. It then multiplies your BMR by your activity factor which you select from the activity level dropdown. The formula for BMR is:

For men:
BMR = 10 * weight(kg) + 6.25 * height(cm) – 5 * age(y) + 5

For women:
BMR = 10 * weight(kg) + 6.25 * height(cm) – 5 * age(y) – 161

The activity factors are:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise) = 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) = 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) = 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) = 1.725
  • Super active (very hard exercise/sports and a physical job) = 1.9
