This calorie calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is an estimate of how many calories you need to maintain your current weight based on your gender, age, weight, height, and activity level. Your daily caloric needs will change with your activity level and goals.

How to Use It:

  • Select your gender.
  • Enter your age in years.
  • Enter your weight in kilograms.
  • Enter your height in centimeters.
  • Choose your daily activity level from the dropdown.
  • Select your goal: maintain weight, lose weight, or gain weight.
  • Click on the ‘Calculate’ button.

How It Calculates:

This calculator first determines your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) using the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation:

  • For men: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (y) + 5
  • For women: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) – 5 * age (y) – 161

Then, it multiplies your BMR by an activity factor to estimate your daily caloric needs:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR * 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days a week): BMR * 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days a week): BMR * 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): BMR * 1.725
  • Super active (very hard exercise/sports & a physical job): BMR * 1.9

Finally, it adjusts this number based on your goal:

  • To maintain weight, it uses the estimated daily caloric need.
  • To lose weight, it subtracts 500 calories per day from the estimated daily caloric need (to generally lose about 0.45 kg per week).
  • To gain weight, it adds 500 calories per day to the estimated daily caloric need (to generally gain about 0.45 kg per week).

Limitations:

This calculator is an estimate and may not reflect your exact caloric needs. Individual factors such as metabolic rate, body composition, and medical conditions can affect your actual caloric requirements. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
