How It Calculates the Results

The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs to maintain basic physiological functions at rest. Depending on your gender, the formula is:

  • For males: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 x weight in kg) + (4.799 x height in cm) – (5.677 x age in years)
  • For females: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 x weight in kg) + (3.098 x height in cm) – (4.330 x age in years)
The calculator then multiplies your BMR by an activity multiplier to estimate your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), which is the number of calories you burn per day considering your activity level. The activity multipliers are:
  • Sedentary: BMR x 1.2
  • Lightly active: BMR x 1.375
  • Moderately active: BMR x 1.55
  • Active: BMR x 1.725
  • Very active: BMR x 1.9
To determine the daily caloric deficit needed to reach your goal weight in one week, it calculates the required caloric reduction per day. Finally, it calculates your daily caloric needs for a deficit and the recommended protein intake based on your goal weight.

Limitations

While this calculator can give a good estimate of your calorie needs and protein intake, it has some limitations:

  • Individual variations: Metabolism can vary greatly between individuals, and factors such as muscle mass, genetics, and hormonal health can influence your actual calorie needs.
  • Precision: The calculator provides an estimate and should not be considered 100% accurate.
  • Dietary changes: Any significant dietary changes should be discussed with a healthcare provider or nutritionist, especially if you have specific health conditions.
