How It Works

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs at rest. The BMR is then multiplied by an activity factor that corresponds to your lifestyle to estimate your total daily calorie needs for maintenance.

  • If you are male, BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 * weight) + (4.799 * height) – (5.677 * age).
  • If you are female, BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 * weight) + (3.098 * height) – (4.330 * age).

The activity factor varies based on your activity level:

  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week): 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week): 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): 1.725
  • Super active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job): 1.9
