Calculation Methodology:

The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic functions at rest. It then multiplies your BMR by an activity factor to estimate your daily calorie needs.

  • For men: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 * weight) + (4.799 * height) – (5.677 * age)
  • For women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 * weight) + (3.098 * height) – (4.330 * age)

The activity factors are as follows:

  • Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR * 1.2
  • Lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week): BMR * 1.375
  • Moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week): BMR * 1.55
  • Very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week): BMR * 1.725
  • Extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job): BMR * 1.9
