Explanation

The calculator uses the following steps and formulas to compute your calorie and protein needs:

  • First, it calculates the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) using the Harris-Benedict equation:
    • For men: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 × weight in kg) + (4.799 × height in cm) – (5.677 × age in years)
    • For women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) – (4.330 × age in years)
  • Next, it multiplies the BMR by an activity factor to get the Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE):
    • Sedentary: TDEE = BMR × 1.2
    • Lightly active: TDEE = BMR × 1.375
    • Moderately active: TDEE = BMR × 1.55
    • Active: TDEE = BMR × 1.725
    • Very active: TDEE = BMR × 1.9
  • The calculator then adjusts the TDEE based on your goal:
    • Lose weight: TDEE – 500 kcal/day
    • Maintain weight: TDEE (no change)
    • Gain weight: TDEE + 500 kcal/day
  • The protein requirement is calculated based on the goal:
    • Lose weight: 1.5-2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight
    • Maintain weight: 1.2-1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight
    • Gain weight: 1.8-2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight
